Fall Kickoff!

Damn it has been a while since I’ve posted anything here! Well, I’m back in the thick of it and Fall is officially in full swing so I’m once again on my posting game:-)
It was a very productive and busy summer filled with great new music being created across the board. Music for TV and radio advertisements, music for London fashion week for Maybelline, record company meetings with exciting new artists and everything in between! Much music has been created in a vast array of styles and genres…
Check out www.enginesound.com to watch and listen to some of the latest advertising music.

This week I’m in the process of working on 3 new tracks for 3 very different and gifted artists. I had a great time yesterday with Kathy Sommer and Amanda Rain tracking on Kathy’s wonderful Yamaha C6 for a new production that will feature a fantastic string quartet featuring the very talented and sweet Cenovia Cummins and her sister Stephanie. Also working on some new ad music for Kroger and Fred Meyer stores…

In addition to all the studio time I’m also happily getting back into doing some live gigs. Tomorrow I’ll be rehearsing for a gig here in NYC on the 25 with my longtime producer/friend/mentor/all around great guy David Wolfert and the amazing Natasha Alexander (also known as NLX) www.nlxmusic.com. I can’t wait to catch up David and to play with these 2 truly talented and wonderful people! Monday I have another rehearsal with Nikki Gregoroff www.nikkigregoroff.comand crew. I produced Nikki’s most recent record and it’s really a beautiful album. I can’t wait for it to be officially released. She’s one of my favorite singers of all time and it’s such a pleasure and so much fun to be playing with her. Gigs for that band are coming in the new year!

That’s it for now. Enjoy the fall weather while you can!

Soooo….

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve checked in!
So far the summer has been fantastic. Lots of great music being written and produced in many areas:-) I’ve also been much more proactive with getting out of the studio and both meeting new wonderful people as well as catching up with old friends and clients.

A few stand outs over the past week were Tuesdays great Tame Impala show at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. By far one of my favorite bands! Got to see them twice on this tour and they sounded perfect and the weather was as good as it gets for an outside concert…

I attended 2 days of Sync Summit here in Manhattan this week as well. Lots of great people doing wonderful things for music for picture, licensing and advertising. Lots of heavyweight music supervisors as well as publishers and writers as well. I got to catch up with some agency music producers and publishers and learned quite a bit a long the way. Looking forward to working with some of the new folks I met and generally really pleased with the overall positivity of the industry moving ahead!

I also got news that the film Sugar! starring Tony winner Alice Ripleywill that I did some engineering on and Steve O’Reilly wrote the music for will be premiering at the Long Island International Film Expo on July 20th which should be fun!

Lastly I got to catch up with some old friends and two of the greatest drummers around last night as we attended the Seth Meyers show and watched Johnny Tempesta as guest drummer. He was amazing as always and we had a lot of fun afterwards:-) Johnny was sitting in with the band all week as The Cult just wrapped some dates on tour with Guns and Roses. Good stuff!

Have a great weekend. Weather looks sweet!

Badass

There were a lot of great things that happened this week…

but nothing was as cool as working with Jerry Barnes (Nile Rodgers/Chic). I was humbled by his baddness…

It may be a long time before I pick up the bass guitar again.

Enjoy the weekend!

Happy Friday the 13th all!

Back in 1980 a young Kevin Bacon was getting his film start in the horror film centered around this day. For most of my youth I had nightmares about this film yet it’s many sequels yet never stopped getting excited when a new one came out. It was one of the better sound design moments of the day (ch, ch ,ch, ha, ha, ha). C’mon, you know it! Thanks for the sound and score Harry Manfredini…
And now that a few of my friends and colleagues play with Mr. Bacon and his brother in their band, I managed to hook my wife and rabid Bacon fan up with a meet and greet thus gaining me massive points AND proving the six degree phenomenon:-)

It was a great week working with some amazing talent! Melissa Otero, Odiseas Georgiadis, Cassidy Ladden, Haley Warner and more…

It was also the AMP awards which I attended and got a chance to catch up with so many old friends and fellow musicians and producers! We all had a great time right down to the James Hotel “afterparty”:-) It was great hanging with Georg Bissen and old friend and colleague Angelina Powers. Caught up with and had funny flashbacks with Randy Lee from Limebeat and met the really sweet folks at Headroom in NYC and Comma in Chicago…

Enjoy the weekend yo!

Cinco De Mayo!

Happy May Folks!

Been a couple weeks since last check in… Been busy in the city making lots of great new music:-)

Working on 2 new tracks with the amazing talented and genuinely funny Brooke Moriber. The first of these tracks we’re collaborating with one of my favorite people in the business and a wonderful writer Alex Forbes. The three of us had a great time digging in and set the first track strongly in motion.

Got to listen to, produce and record the vocal excellence of Erin Bowman on a brand new cut this week. Always love working with her!

Finalized new ad music for Kroger stores which should hit the air in the coming weeks:-)

More work was done on the latest theater project with some amazingly talented folks. More to come as this develops and can be broadcast.

Team Odiseas is in full swing finishing up the latest track. We’re all really excited about the how it’s all coming together. We even found some crazy (and wildly untrue) gossip on the internet between O and Katie Holmes… The rumors start early kids…

Melissa Otero and I finally broke ground on her new set of singles to follow up her epic Angels and Demons record! It’s going to be beautiful and we’re both excited to be moving forward on the first single this month.

Had the pleasure of finishing up a mix with the great Jenny Bruce and Noel Cohen. Love both of them and the music they create! Congrats to Noel’s son and upcoming superstar actor Emory Cohen on his engagement!

Met up with old friend and Zen Music colleague Georg Bissen this week to catch up and talk shop. Georg is an incredible talent. One of the best electronic music producers, DJs and composers out there. Check out his bad ass podcast Bissen:TranceAtlantic!

Enjoy the weekend!

Tribeca Film Festival

Greetings:-)

It was another busy week at Engine Sound! Mixes were wrapped. New work in television and advertising arrived. Clients had big birthdays. Many beautiful voices were heard both in and out of the studio. Performances were given on stages and in vocal booths. Fish were caught and cooked. Andy Karl moved me with his talent. Parties were attended. Productions ensued. New leases were signed. Epic cab rides were had. Johnny and The Cult kicked serious ass at the Wellmont. Caves were explored. And tonight Odiseas Georgiadis is attending his premiere of “All We Had” directed by and starring Katie Holmes at the great Tribeca Film Festival.

That is all.

Welcoming April

Hi All,
April is off to a very nice start:-) It was a busy week at the studio working on quite a diverse palette of music…

-Composing was done for a new ad campaign which looks like it was signed off on mid week. More to come upon true final approval:-)
-There was post production for Michael Kors done mid week with a lovely group of folks having a good ole’ time at the studio!
-More final mixing was done on the songs that were recorded last week for Laine. This will continue into next week as well…
-The writing team of Kathy Sommer, Alex Forbes and Noel Cohen wrote a very cool song which we produced and had the pleasure of listening to and recording the amazing voice
of Kim Viera grace the vocal. What a voice. She always impresses me and anyone else within earshot!
-More production was done with Odiseas Georgiadis and Kathy Sommer and Michael Guerriero on a song we wrote together that’s coming out bad ass:-) Congrats to Odiseas on
his spot in the Tribecca film festival for the premiere of the film “All We Had” where he appears with Katie Holmes.
-I escaped the studio to have the pleasure of listening to my long time friend and colleague Dana Calitri perform the songs of Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” with the very talented Ira Siegel on guitar and Jeff Franzell on piano. So much talent in that trio! Dana was incredible and effortless:-) The show sold out and they added another coming later this month. Go see her!
-A hot new dance inspired track for a brand new client was finished up yesterday as were a few tweaks some recent mixes.
-Another “out of studio” experience was had as I got to chat a bit with the talented Melissa Otero to discuss producing her new record:-) Very excited about this! Melissa is top notch
and as cool and sweet as they come. We are going to have a lot of fun making some incredible music in the coming months!

I’m off this weekend to meet up with old friend and rock and roll veteran Johnny Tempesta to hang a bit and watch him perform with The Cult tomorrow night! Good times y’all!

It was 24 years ago today!!!

Today marks my 24th year as an audio professional! On April 1st 1992 I was officially hired as assistant engineer at Zen Music on 26th Street in Manhattan by the good folks Craig Hazen and Julie Dansky. I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most talented engineers, producers, writers and musicians in the city and the world for then next 10 years of my employment there as I worked hard and worked my way up branching out into production, composing and sound design .

I am very fortunate to have been able to turn something I love so much and am so passionate about into such a enjoyable and rewarding career. I am thankful for all the incredibly talented people I’ve been able to work with and call my friends over this time. I think that the creative and artistic people I’ve spent my days with are some of the finest and most intelligent, open minded people you will ever meet and I’m grateful for each and every one of them.

A lot has changed since my first day as an assistant but the things that really matter the most have remained a constant. There is no replacement for a great song. There is no replacement for a great voice, be it sung or performed through an instrument. There is no replacement for hard work, determination and creativity. The way we produce, record and package all these things has changed an incredible amount and it always will, but if you listen to the music that is inspiring and rising up at any time you will always find the same core elements. Let’s continue to strive for them. I’ll keep up with the new software and gear for us:-)

Enjoy the weekend!

March Madness:-)

Well, not really madness, but…

A great week was had working with some fine artists and writers… I got to spend two days working with longtime friend and songwriter Noel Cohen this week. We tracked 2 new songs he’s been working on with a few other of our favorite writers. The latter track is a really fun latin track sung as a duet in Spanish by the multi talented Andres Quintero and a new singer I just met named Daiana Segovia. Daiana just lent her wonderful voice to the Netflix show Marco Polo and Andres can been seen on Law and Order from time to time as an actor:-) Speaking of acting, you must check out Noel’s son Emory Cohen in the film Brooklyn. He has an amazing lead role and completely delivers! Watch his career as I believe it’s about to go mental:-)

I completed the 5th and final track for miss Laine who will be visiting the studio in a week to do vocals and finish the mixes. I’m looking forward to digging in for a few days with her and making something wonderful.

I met up with the talented young Haley Warner yesterday once again. We had a great day in the studio and were able to record and shoot a bit of live video of her performance in the vocal booth for youtube which turned out looking and sounding quite nice:-) Always fun to work with her. I look forward to more projects and digging into deeper production with her in the future.

This week also was the long awaited release of the first single of my good friend and long term client artist Monica Sharma. I’m so happy and proud of Monica for all the work she’s been putting in. I’m delighted to see her fanbase growing at such a fast pace and her artistic career really beginning with full force!

Lastly, I head into the studio tomorrow for a meeting with a very young new artist who sounds absolutely amazing. She has an amazing full voice with a surprising low range for her age. Her writing is wise beyond her years as well and she has what I believe is a fantastic support team in place. She comes to me by one of my favorite people and musicians on the planet Mr. JJ Appleton (check out JJ on the Jewel tour now). We will meet to discuss the overall production and best ways to move forward and make some inspired new music together!

Stay young. Stay real…

M
